so i am one of those parents you talk about--or maybe, you're hissing at me under your breath. we let the kids have our iPods. i loaded "quiet music," (as keahi calls it...it's smooth jazz), PBS video podcasts, national geographic videos and the like. the kids are just CRAZY for time with their iPods. the current favorite is PBS' super readers.
i was not easily convinced that my pre-school aged boy and kindergarten girl should handle such expensive equipment, and john agreed. "no touching the electronics!" we would always say when one of them had a remote control. now we say, "no water around the electronics," and "you should be sitting down when using your iPod." we're crazy, you think.
as a teacher, i am constantly reminded of the importance of preparing our students for the 21st century....that children these days will solve problems with technology that hasn't been invented yet. think about that for any amount of time, and you will see that having iPods in their possession isn't all that crazy of an idea.
